
Lucy Bowditch
Lucy Bowditch - Albany Art Historian and Professor Emeritus
An art historian based in New York, New York, with decades of experience in higher education and visual culture, Lucy Bowditch earned her bachelor's degree in art history from Bowdoin College in 1977, where she completed a senior thesis on “Nicholas Poussin: Starting with the Modes.” Lucy Bowditch later earned a doctorate in art history from the University of Chicago in 1994. Her dissertation was on the photographer Edward Steichen
From 1995 to 2021, Dr. Bowditch taught at the College of Saint Rose, where her courses covered modern and contemporary art, photography, and women in art. One of her regular offerings, Art Now, involved student visits to galleries and institutions in New York City. Her work has appeared in publications including History of Photography, Afterimage, and The New England Quarterly. She has also contributed to reference books including Art & Place and Art in Time.
Now a professor emeritus, Dr. Bowditch continues to research 19th century French paintings, with a current focus on Gustave Courbet. Her academic work also engages with topics in fashion theory and photography. Outside of her professional life, she supports groups such as Education Africa and Girls, Inc. She takes great pleasure in sailing and skiing.
